Dentistry involves the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases of the mouth.

Course outline

Dentistry involves the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases of the mouth. This can include orthodontic treatment, replacement of missing teeth and the treatment of gum disease, and discoloured and damaged teeth. As personal appearance, speech and general health assumes greater importance, we are now demanding higher levels of professional care from dentists. In the final year of the course you will spend most of your time working in clinical supervised outplacements. The course makes full use of the excellent facilities at the School of Dentistry—the only institution in Western Australia where students can train to become a dentist.

Professional pathway

Undergraduate degree (3 years)*: Bachelor’s degree in any discipline (see specific entry requirements above)

Postgraduate degree (4 years): Doctor of Dental Medicine

*Students who undertake a BPhil(Hons) will take four years to complete their undergraduate degree.

Admission requirements

In addition to the University’s requirement for English language competence, entry to the DMD will be based upon the following criteria:

School leaver pathways

A number of places in the DMD will be reserved for well-qualified Year 12 applicants (including Rural students and participants in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences Outer Metropolitan Program). Selection will be based on ISAT, academic performance* (ATAR or equivalent), a structured interview and manual dexterity and spatial awareness admission tests. All applicants offered a place on this pathway will have a guaranteed place on the DMD on the successful completion of a UWA bachelor degree with a grade point average of 5.5 (approximately 65%).

*Assured Pathway (High Academic Achievement) will require a minimum ATAR of 99 or equivalent.
Rural and Outer Metropolitan Pathways will require a minimum ATAR of 96 or equivalent
 

Standard pathway

  • Completion of an undergraduate bachelor’s degree with a Grade Point Average of at least 5.5 (weighted average of approximately 65 per cent)
  • Minimum GAMSAT score of 50 overall and 50 in each section
  • Structured interview
  • Manual dexterity and spatial awareness admission tests

International Applicants

Assured Pathway (International School Leavers)
A number of places in the DMD will be reserved for international school leavers. Selection will be based on ISAT, academic performance* (ATAR or equivalent), a structured interview and manual dexterity and spatial awareness admission tests. All applicants offered a place on this pathway will have a guaranteed place on the DMD on the successful completion of a UWA bachelor degree with a grade point average of 5.5 (approximately 65%).
* Assured Pathway (International School Leavers) will require a minimum ATAR of 96 or equivalent– contact the International Centre for the equivalent
Standard Pathway
  • Completion of an undergraduate bachelor’s degree with a Grade Point Average of at least 5.5 (weighted average of approximately 65 per cent)
  • Minimum GAMSAT score of 50 overall and 50 in each section OR
  • MCAT with 8 (Verbal Reasoning), 8 (Physical Sciences), M (Writing Sample), 8 (Physical Sciences)
  • Structured interview
  • Manual dexterity and spatial awareness admission tests
