As a graduate of this School and its current Dean and Head, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the School of Dentistry at the University of Western Australia.
The School has a long and established history in dental education, and recently celebrated its 70th anniversary. It was in 1946 that the first intake of dental students was admitted, and in 1951 the first cohort of dentists graduated from this University. Many things have changed at the School over the years, and I’m sure much more will change in the future.
Our School’s vision is to be recognised internationally as a contemporary, progressive, innovative and vibrant centre of excellence in dentistry. Our mission is to achieve excellence in dental education, research and oral health care to the benefit of our local community and the advancement of dentistry globally. As our students progress through their programs they are continuously reminded of our motto; achieve excellence, pursuing impossible.
The School continually works towards further enhancing the learning experience of our students. We aim to ensure that all our students are able to succeed and thrive not only in their studies but also in their future dental careers where life-long learning, continuing professional development and continuous improvement are integrated into evidence-based best practice.
Students’ education is achieved in many ways, through the interaction of dedicated, highly qualified academics and tutors, in state-of-the-art facilities, with up-to-date equipment and technology. Our facilities include modern dental operatories each equipped with intra-oral digital radiography, a digital radiology suite (OPG and Cone Beam CT), a comprehensive CAD/CAM laboratory (robotic mills and digital impression carts), and a Virtual Learning Centre (incorporating high specification computing for digital radiology, virtual microscopy and computer assisted design).
Our graduate Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) program is very clinically focussed, where students commence treating patients in their first year. The School also offers a wide range of accredited Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent) postgraduate speciality training programs in Endodontics, Orthodontics, Periodontics, Paediatric Dentistry and Oral Medicine. These programs enrich the training environment at the School, and offer opportunities for advanced patient care.
The School has a strategic research agenda, and supports seven research programs. These programs form the core of the School’s research efforts, encompassing focussed projects for DMD, DClinDent and Higher Degree by Research (HDR) postgraduate students, academic and research staff. Research facilities include laboratories for molecular biology, tissue culture, histopathology, and materials science, in addition to Next Generation Sequencing platforms for genomic research.
The School operates the Oral Health Centre of WA (OHCWA), a centralised public tertiary referral centre and dental teaching hospital, where eligible patients are treated on behalf of the State Government of WA. OHCWA offers a full range of general and speciality dental services to the Western Australian community, and we are proud of the high standard of care provided by our clinicians, dental clinical assistants and laboratory technicians.
Our School is well connected with its alumni, the community and the profession. We strive to build on these relationships, harness their potential, and instil a sense of giving back in all our graduates.
Achieve excellence, pursue impossible.
I invite you to experience our School through a short video.
